On Tuesday 15 November, the UK government voted against an amendment to the King’s speech, calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, Palestine1. At the time of planning this event, more than 14,000 Palestinian people have died, with over 5600 of these being children2. There is no aid, no power, no communications in Gaza3. Israel, the occupying force, is one of the most heavily armed nations in the world4 and have openly declared their intentions in this conflict, described as a ‘textbook case of genocide’5 by Craig Mokhiber, ex-director of the UN (he resigned in protest).

It is easy to feel powerless in the face of such atrocities, to turn away, to scroll on or turn over the channel. To not know what to say or to worry about not knowing enough, to believe that your voice doesn’t make a difference. This is the time to use your voice and do something; listen and learn about the history and current situation; ask those with influence to demand ceasefire.

Come along to Square Deal, on Wednesday 6 December, to listen, make and learn together. This event offers an informal, calm and open space to listen to the voices of Palestinian people, through sound, text and music, in a curated radio broadcast – Until Liberation by Learning Palestine Group. Listening to parts of this 12 hour compilation together, we will learn of the history of the Palestinian struggle, their cultures and fight for liberation from Israel's oppression.

Alongside, you are welcome to contribute to our olive branch community banner, started at the Huntly Farmers’ Market, to make a poster for your window, and to sign or write a letter to our political representatives.

Over the years, Deveron Projects has hosted and worked with artists and partners from all over the world. The projects created have linked Huntly with global experiences and issues, showing how we are interconnected with other people and places. Many artists have made artworks in support of global justice movements, including the liberation of Palestine- after a century of occupation by the UK and subsequently Israel. Like then, Deveron Projects stands with Palestine now.

This is a family-friendly event. Children are welcome and we will have some resources to support carers to talk to children about what’s happening in Palestine. Don't worry if you don't know anyone or haven't been to an event like this before. We are a friendly and welcoming bunch and would be happy to chat before the event if you aren't sure what to expect or are nervous about not knowing anyone.

We believe that being pro-Palestine and against anti-Semitism go hand in hand, because all systems of oppression reinforce one another, and cannot be fought in isolation.

There is an access guide for Square Deal online here.
Refreshments will be provided.
