Artists’ Socials: August

We’re inviting artists* working in Aberdeenshire to join us for a relaxed Artists’ Social at Square Deal in Huntly. Artists’ Socials are just what they say on the tin – a chance for artists to socialise. Come along, create connections and be a part of a supportive creative community here in Aberdeenshire.

After a short break, socials are back on a bi-monthly basis. These meet ups will still have a different focus each time; this could be an informal studio visit with an artist-in-residence at Deveron Projects, a materials swap, practical knowledge-building sessions on how to access support for your practice, among many other possibilities! What we focus on each month will be led by you, and everyone who comes along, with the support of Deveron Projects.

We hope these social events will offer mutual support and networks to enrich and develop your practice, whichever form this may take.

 

 

It can be difficult to share your practice – finding the words or format to explain what you do, or feeling confident to do so – can be an ongoing challenge for many artists and creative practitioners. Despite this, talking through ideas, inspiration, research or process with others can offer insight, clarity, possibilities and validation!
 

In this artists’ social we will explore talking about art and ideas. Starting with artworks we find inspiring, interesting or that influence our practices, we will have one-to-one, short chats about things that are important to our work.

From this, there will be the option to move on to sharing something that we’re working on – this can be the initial seed of an idea, or something that you’ve been developing for a while. (you can also continue to talk about others’ work if that feels more comfortable).  Again, one-to-one conversations will keep these chats low-pressure, friendly and offer mutual exchange. The intention is not to offer critical feedback, rather to practice sharing our work within a supportive group and to get to know each other’s practices.

Lastly we will share an update on February’s Artists’ Social, which focused on studios.

Square Deal has level access from The Square, Huntly.  There is an accessible toilet up a ramp, with baby changing facilities. The seating is folding metal chairs with backs and no arms. Babies, children and family members (bio/non-bio) are very welcome – let us know if you are bringing someone with you. If there is anything we can put in place to help you feel comfortable at this event, please get in touch.

*Artists take many forms and make different types of work. This might include, but is not limited to: painting, sculpting, drawing, performing, singing, walking, dreaming, facilitating, collaborating, writing, playing music, creating, thinking, growing, cooking… You do not need to have studied art, shown your work publicly, or be making things regularly to be an artist.
