Huntly in Harmony

Without music, life would be a mistake.
Friedrich Nietzsche, Twilight of the Idols

Donal Brown is a piper and Scottish step dancer originally from Huntly. Since his studies at the RCS, he has gone on to become one of Scotland’s most prominent artists in traditional music. He was Huntly’s first town piper in 2005.

Huntly has a rich tradition in Scottish music with many people being involved in the playing of fiddle music, joining the pipe band or singing bothy ballads from a young age. Through a series of residencies with traditional musicians Deveron Projects wished to celebrate this rich cultural asset.

During his residency he produced the Huntly in Harmony collection containing 30 new written pieces for the Scottish pipe. These include a variety of types of tune: marches, Strathspeys, reels, jigs, and hornpipes, for which he was collaborating with a wide variety of local groups and musicians.
