In collaboration with Neep & Okra and Honesty Bakehouse, we were really excited to bring to you the Summer Cookery School, taking place in Huntly at Square Deal over the 2021 school holidays for children aged 10+.

We were inviting kids to join us to learn kitchen skills, cook new flavours, collect fresh garden-grown ingredients and play with all this new knowledge from Neep & Okra and Honesty Bakehouse. Creative activities were sent out each week by us to everyone involved to build on the skills learnt in the workshops – think vegetable mask and costume making, garden comic strip designing and recipe booklet printing!

We had five weeks for kids to choose from, listed below, with each week featuring a new theme of dish. Workshops were taking place every Tuesday afternoon from 13th July – 10th August and each workshop involved a small fee per child, per workshop. We were hosting groups of six for each week, to allow for lots of space to learn, taste and cook new things and to get creative with recipes!

The weeks were as follows:

Week One: Biscuit Week.
This week, the children were learning how to make buttery shortbread and fruity smoothies with fresh herbs from the Deveron Projects Brander Garden.
Week Two: Picnic Week.
We were exploring how to make cheese straws, dips and quick pickles this week.
Week Three: Family Supper Week.
This week we were making a big dish of vegetable tarts, and finding out about flowers that you can eat.
Week Four: Afternoon Tea Week.
This week, the children were learning how to make some sweet strawberry buns, fruit compote and the magic of crystallising edible flowers.
Week Five: Bread and Butter Week.
Getting back to basics for our final week, we learned how to make soda bread and handmade herb butter.
