Feeling helpless in the face of food price inflation? Growing some of your own favourite summer foods could help you feel more in control, while also being an enjoyable and empowering experience.

We were inviting everyone – whether they had a greenhouse, polytunnel or just a windowsill; whether they were beginners or just fancy a sociable morning doing some table top sowing with a group of gardening enthusiasts – to get a head start by planting indoors can lengthen the vegetable growing season and widen the range of fruits and vegetables that can be grown here in the North East of Scotland. All were welcome to try growing their own tomatoes, chilies, cucumbers and more undercover with the guidance and support of experienced gardener Lindy Young.

Location and Accessibility:

The Square Deal garden is accessed from the Town Square, via the alley next to Square Deal. There is level access along the alley, which is around 50m long. At the end of the alley there is a small grassy area, and a paved patio, where the workshop will take place. Please dress for the weather. There is seating available and an accessible toilet with baby changing facilities in Square Deal.

Tools, compost, seeds and cups of tea provided!

About the project:

This workshop forms part of our project Caretakers' Garden. Named after the former residents of the caretaker's flat at the Brander Building (now the Deveron Projects office!), Caretakers' Garden will build sustainable systems of care in the Brander and Square Deal gardens, for the benefit of current and future inhabitants. As a starting point, we are asking, what is our role in caring for these gardens in the present and into uncertain futures? How do we build the means for communities (human and more-than-human) to enjoy the gardens and care for each other in?

Together we will work to create a learning space for novice and seasoned gardeners – a space for exploration, experimentation and exchange. Regular workshops, drop-in sessions and artists' projects will open the gardens up, inviting new 'caretakers' to come along and learn, help take care and be cared for.
