Writer, artist, researcher and Scottish Communities Climate Action Network story weaver Joana Avi-Lorie joined us for the day to lead a hands-on fun story-writing workshop focused on climate resilience and justice.

For children 8+ and adults alike, this workshop involved several quick and intuitive writing exercises exploring themes such as biodiversity, clean energy, food security, and social justice, leading up to the creation of an original fairy tale or science fiction story. Each story could be written, drawn, performed, or filmed with your phone, with the stories then shared with the group at the end of the workshop.

This event took place on the weekend of the Huntly Hairst, a time where local food, producers, skills and knowledge is celebrated. Check out our other events had going on: a Reading Room of texts and books collected throughout Hussein’s project, and a Huntly Climate Ceilidh taking place in the evening. This event was also part of the Climate Fringe Festival, a Scotland wide festival celebrating climate action and justice work.

About the project
This event is a part of The World is Ours, In Spite of All, a project with artist and educator Hussein Mitha. The project, made in collaboration with young people, explores how climate justice can repair our world, considering education and its challenges in a time of climate emergency with an aim to cultivate an ethos of inspiration, cooperation, connection and solidarity to rise to those challenges.
